Character Survey of Doom
5. Who is/was the character's best friend? How did they meet?
“Was”? Sakurazuka Seishirou, I suppose. As for how they met…well that is an interesting story. Let’s just say it was underneath a cherry blossom tree.

He’s about five feet, seven inches tall. Underweight, thin. He’s pretty slim. His bones are thin, and all in all he looks rather delicate. His facial structure is nice; he has high cheekbones. His forehead is a bit on the large side.

3. Describe his posture. Does he carry himself well or does he slouch?
That depends. For the most part, he’s very rigid and upright – he has good posture. His grandmother taught him well! When he’s alone, though, he tends to slouch. He’s rather world-weary, and it shows.

Pretty fit apart from the fact that he’s underweight. He gets sick easily.

He’d be graceful if he weren’t so tense all the time. He doesn’t relax easily. His movements tend to fluctuate between stiff and fluid.
6. How attractive is this character physically? How does he perceive himself in the mirror?
The word “handsome” doesn’t fit him, but “beautiful” or “pretty” easily would. It’s implied that he is rather good-looking since Sorata comments he is “lucky that all the Dragons of Heaven are pretty” soon after meeting him. Kamui has a crush on him and both himself and his friend comment that Subaru is “pretty”. Subaru doesn’t see anything amazing about himself, though; he’s never struck me as vain and I have the distinct feeling he doesn’t place much conscious thought into his physical appearance. He likely doesn’t feel it’s necessary.

His skin is very pale and mostly clear; the only thing of note is the inverted pentagram scars on the back of his hands. Other than that, he doesn’t have any sort of scars or “imperfections”.

Plain ole’ black. I’m going out on a limb and assuming his hair is soft. When he was younger, his hair used to be styled effeminately, to match his sister’s; it was just a tad longer than most men might wear. Now his hair is cropped short, more similar to Seishirou’s.

His left eye is an emerald green colour, while the right is milky white (blind). Presently, it’s covered in bandages.
10. Does the character have any other noteworthy features?
Hmm. Nothing, apart from his scars.
11. What are his chief tension centers?
Everywhere. His back, shoulders, and hands.
12. What is the character's wardrobe like? Casual, dressy, utilitarian? Bright colors, pastels, neutrals? Is it varied, or does he have six of the same suit?
He dresses very plainly – his sister would cry if she saw him. His general wardrobe consists of jeans, a black t-shirt, black shoes, and a long white coat. He has little to no variations in his closet – most of his apparel is the cheap sort which one could easily find in a second-hand store. At the time he was pulled from canon, he was wearing a black t-shirt fastened at the collar with a buckle, a pair of black pants, black shoes, bandages wrapped around his head (covering his right eye), and his usual long white coat. The coat is the most expensive thing he has.

They mostly fit well, and they’re comfortable. Sometimes they’re a bit baggy. For the most part, they’re kind of tight and form-fitting.

Yes – he dresses exactly the same on the job.

Boxers, obviously.
Speech

His voice is soft and gentle. When he’s angry, Subaru’s voice becomes hard and a bit louder. In general, his voice could be called “warm”.

Soft, evenly. How fast he talks depends on what he’s talking about; for the most part, though, his speech comes easily. He doesn’t usually speak before he thinks.

Not that I know of. His speech patterns are polite to those who are older than him; to people younger, he speaks informally, but it’s not a rude sort of informal. It’s quite warm and friendly.

Only Japanese. Whatever English he knows is very, very little. This, combined with lousy fluency, makes him unable to speak English at all – or any other language except for Sanskrit, for that matter.

He’ll switch to Sanskrit, but only for chants and spells. He doesn’t actually speak to anyone in Sanskrit.
6. Is he a good impromptu speaker, or does he have to think about his words?
In general he prefers thinking about his words, although he is a fairly good impromptu speaker as well.
7. Is he eloquent or inarticulate? Under what circumstances might this change?
He’s generally eloquent and quite articulate. This would change if he were flustered or upset.
Mental and Emotional
1. How intelligent is this character? Is he book-smart or street-smart?
Highly intelligent. He’s adaptable and versatile. I’d say he’s more book-smart than street-smart; he lived a sheltered life for the most part, and he seems to me to be an avid reader. Or, perhaps, used to be. However, he’s absolutely clueless about technology, and he’s rather old-fashioned. Also, don’t give him a gun, because he might shoot someone’s eye out on accident.
2. Does he think on his feet, or does he need time to deliberate?
While he prefers thinking of things in advance, he’s actually pretty tactical and a quick-thinker, as shown in his battle with Nataku and Fuuma. It’s second nature for him to process his surroundings and utilize them to his advantage.
3. Describe the character's thought process. Is he more logical, or more intuitive? Idealistic or practical?
For the most part, his thought processes are intuitive and idealistic. However, he knows this and tries to be more practical and logical. He’s a very romantic and idealistic person, which only makes this more difficult.

High school dropout.
5. What are his areas of expertise? What, if anything, is he interested in learning more about?
His one area of expertise is onmyoujutsu. He’d like to learn more about animals and, tentatively, veterinary practice.

Definitely introvert.

Fairly even-tempered. He doesn’t yell or raise his voice very often, and he’s very kind. He’s also very sad and melancholic. He is driven, but only for a certain purpose. He tries to hide his feelings, but he’s not particularly good at it. He’s a horrid liar – he’ll tell one if it’s to keep up pretenses, but he’d rather not. He’s the type of person that would rather be honest or not say anything at all.
8. How does he respond to new people or situations? Is he suspicious, relaxed, timid, enthusiastic?
For the most part, he’s tense. Not exactly suspicious, but not really relaxed or timid, either. He’s not sure what to think, so he’ll be a bit wary while he’s trying to figure out the other person’s intentions. Other than that, he’s pretty relaxed and almost naïve. In new situations, he’s still pretty tense. However, he does have a tendency to get lost in his thoughts or daydream, and if caught in such a stupor he could easily be taken off-guard.

Generally speaking – fight. He does not like confrontation, although he will stand up for himself and for others if it is necessary. He does have a backbone – it was just well-hidden until he turned seventeen.

I think he’s too serious to have one. If I were to say he didn’t have a sense of humour, I’d be lying, since I think he is capable of laughing (albeit not necessarily genuinely). In short: I think he’s more likely to take a joke literally. He’s not too fond of being teased, either. And yes, that includes you, Seishirou. He doesn’t particularly like gallows humour, bathroom jokes, or pranks.
12. Does the character have any diagnosable mental disorders? If yes, how does he deal with them?
Depression. Bordering on major depression. He doesn’t deal with it.
13. What moments in this character's life have defined him as a person?
There are several. The time he met Seishirou under the cherry blossom tree, when Seishirou protected him at the hospital and lost his right eye, the time Seishirou told him he didn’t feel a thing for him, and the moment Seishirou killed Hokuto. Subaru losing his right eye would also count as an important moment, and it depends on your point of view as to whether or not it “defines” him. He’s always felt very guilty about Seishirou losing his eye, and wanted very much to lose his own right eye (since that is what “should” have happened).
14. What does he fear?
Dying by the hand of someone who isn’t that person. I’m sure you can guess who “that person” is by now. Hint: his name starts with an “S”, and he met him underneath a cherry blossom tree.

To be important to a certain person and to die by their hand. While the type of importance he is currently searching for (“be a nuisance to him, someone worthy of being killed”) isn’t the type of importance he wants, it’s the next best thing and he’ll take what he can get. Again, “certain person” is pretty obvious by this point.
16. What is something he doesn't want anyone to find out about him?
Nothing, actually…except for maybe his true Wish. (See the question above.)
Relationships

Next to none. They died when Subaru was very young.

Oh god, this subject. He had an older twin sister named Hokuto. They were very, very, very, very, very close. He absolutely adored her. She was something of a mother to him; always fussing over him, making sure he ate and went to sleep. She sewed clothes for him. Hokuto was the one person who could understand Subaru completely, and when she saw that he was interested in Seishirou, she set off to playing match-maker. She wanted him to have someone he loved, someone for himself, since Subaru would give the world to someone if they wanted it and sacrifice his own wellbeing. In short, Hokuto wanted to prove that Subaru was “human” – because to be human is to want something and be selfish. It’s not a bad trait; it’s a trait that everyone has, and something Subaru seemed to lack. She hated that he never thought of himself.
3. Are there other blood relatives to whom he is close? Are there ones he can't stand?
The only blood relatives he is close to are his grandmother and his sister, the latter of whom is dead. His grandmother is the person who raised him and his sister, and trained him in the art of onmyoujutsu. He loves her dearly, but avoids her since he feels that it is his fault she is injured. He also feels that she resents him because of this.

Nope, there are none.

Given a choice, he would probably choose “family”. As of right now, though, he has neither in particular to think of as “important”. Except for maybe Kamui. And that one other person that doesn’t completely count.

Single. Never been married, despite his sister’s attempts at getting him a happily normal life.

No, unless you count weird mind games and miscommunication and simply being idiots as a romantic relationship. In that case…hmm, I suppose it sort of is one.

His first crush ever would be Mitsuki, a girl he knew in elementary school. His next and only other crush is Sakurazuka Seishirou.

He doesn’t have any children.

Normally I’d say 6, but he did have a crush on a girl when he was younger. So, I’ll go with 5.

He feels that sex is a time where two people who love each other are able to join as one. More specifically, their souls. Subaru hasn’t given it very much thought in any case, except for perhaps in a deep and dark part of his mind that he refuses to face.

Not entirely sure with this one. Given his personality, I think anything other than regular ole’ traditional, er, sex would turn him off, but hey, you never know.

His western sign is Pisces-Aquarius cusp. (Born on February 19th) It actually fits him quite well – he’s very selfless and spiritual. And his significant other/person/thing/soul mate’s sign melds pretty well with his, too. Given that Hokuto, Subaru, and Seishirou talk about zodiac signs in Tokyo Babylon, I wouldn’t be surprised if CLAMP gave a lot of thought into the characters’ birthdays. I’m not so sure about Subaru’s Chinese sign though – he certainly isn’t impulsive, adventurous, aggressive, or much of a leader (that’s more like his twin sister, actually); although I will agree with noble, generous, polite, and sensitive. Also, hahah, 1999 is not a good year for him. Sob.

He is highly spiritual. I’d say that it’s very important; his abilities are based around them, after all.

Yes, he does have a code of morals and ethics. And it’s quite hard to compromise. Don’t worry, though; he’ll be doing that on his own quite easily.

His social status hasn’t changed much. Generally speaking he’s of the “upper class” what with having a prestigious position and all, although the way he lives definitely doesn’t show it.

Apartment. It’s pretty bare and ordinary. It doesn’t have much furniture.

He is an onmyouji, an occupation which has quite a heavy amount of responsibilities tied to it. Subaru has gotten used to it, and he’s pretty darn good at it, too. I wouldn’t say he enjoys it in particular, though. He’d rather be a zookeeper.

His interests are animals and the Sakurazukamori. His free time is spent looking for the aforementioned Sakurazukamori. Either that, or helping Kamui with his studies.

Hokuto was the one person who could understand Subaru completely, and when she saw that he was interested in Seishirou, she set off to playing match-maker. She wanted him to have someone he loved, someone for himself, since Subaru would give the world to someone if they wanted it and sacrifice his own wellbeing. In short, Hokuto wanted to prove that Subaru was “human” – because to be human is to want something and be selfish. It’s not a bad trait; it’s a trait that everyone has, and something Subaru seemed to lack. She hated that he never thought of himself.

The only blood relatives he is close to are his grandmother and his sister, the latter of whom is dead. His grandmother is the person who raised him and his sister, and trained him in the art of onmyoujutsu. He loves her dearly, but avoids her since he feels that it is his fault she is injured. He also feels that she resents him because of this.

Nope, there are none.
5. Who is/was the character's best friend? How did they meet?
“Was”? Sakurazuka Seishirou, I suppose. As for how they met…well that is an interesting story. Let’s just say it was underneath a cherry blossom tree.

No.
7. Does he make friends easily, or does he have trouble getting along with people?
Doesn’t have friends and doesn’t particularly want any. It’s not that he’s unfriendly, it’s that he’s…jaded. He’s polite, but he has a tendency to keep people at a distance. When he was younger, though, he was always making acquaintances and meeting people he had a great amount of respect for.
8. Which does he consider more important: family or friends?
Given a choice, he would probably choose “family”. As of right now, though, he has neither in particular to think of as “important”. Except for maybe Kamui. And that one other person that doesn’t completely count.

Single. Never been married, despite his sister’s attempts at getting him a happily normal life.

No, unless you count weird mind games and miscommunication and simply being idiots as a romantic relationship. In that case…hmm, I suppose it sort of is one.

His first crush ever would be Mitsuki, a girl he knew in elementary school. His next and only other crush is Sakurazuka Seishirou.

Sakurazuka Seishirou.

He doesn’t have any children.

Sakurazuka Seishirou.

Normally I’d say 6, but he did have a crush on a girl when he was younger. So, I’ll go with 5.

He feels that sex is a time where two people who love each other are able to join as one. More specifically, their souls. Subaru hasn’t given it very much thought in any case, except for perhaps in a deep and dark part of his mind that he refuses to face.

Not entirely sure with this one. Given his personality, I think anything other than regular ole’ traditional, er, sex would turn him off, but hey, you never know.
Beliefs

His western sign is Pisces-Aquarius cusp. (Born on February 19th) It actually fits him quite well – he’s very selfless and spiritual. And his significant other/person/thing/soul mate’s sign melds pretty well with his, too. Given that Hokuto, Subaru, and Seishirou talk about zodiac signs in Tokyo Babylon, I wouldn’t be surprised if CLAMP gave a lot of thought into the characters’ birthdays. I’m not so sure about Subaru’s Chinese sign though – he certainly isn’t impulsive, adventurous, aggressive, or much of a leader (that’s more like his twin sister, actually); although I will agree with noble, generous, polite, and sensitive. Also, hahah, 1999 is not a good year for him. Sob.

He is highly spiritual. I’d say that it’s very important; his abilities are based around them, after all.

Yes, he does have a code of morals and ethics. And it’s quite hard to compromise. Don’t worry, though; he’ll be doing that on his own quite easily.

Indifferent, mostly.

No prejudices in particular, actually. He’s rather open-minded and understanding of others.

I’d say comfortable. He’s the thirteenth head of an ancient onmyouji clan.

His social status hasn’t changed much. Generally speaking he’s of the “upper class” what with having a prestigious position and all, although the way he lives definitely doesn’t show it.

Apartment. It’s pretty bare and ordinary. It doesn’t have much furniture.
4. Besides the basic necessities, what does he spend his money on?
…Nothing, really.
5. What does he do for a living? Is he good at it? Does he enjoy it, or would he rather be doing something else?
He is an onmyouji, an occupation which has quite a heavy amount of responsibilities tied to it. Subaru has gotten used to it, and he’s pretty darn good at it, too. I wouldn’t say he enjoys it in particular, though. He’d rather be a zookeeper.
6. What are his interests or hobbies? How does he spend his free time?
His interests are animals and the Sakurazukamori. His free time is spent looking for the aforementioned Sakurazukamori. Either that, or helping Kamui with his studies.

He skips out on meals a lot…he’ll only eat when he’s very hungry. He mostly eats instant foods – don’t ask him to cook, he might burn your house down – and his food choice isn’t particularly nutritious. He doesn’t really care, though, since he lost the ability to enjoy food quite a while ago. He won’t touch alcohol.
